It’s My Party! No Tears I’m 9!

It’s our 9th Birthday!

What do most 9 Year old’s want for their birthday?  An Xbox, a Nintendo switch?  We would settle for a day off!  We have been so busy!!

In 2009 Welsh Assembly Government withdrew local authority funding which resulted in a change to the way temporary accommodation was managed. For Cardiff County Council alone this resulted in a cut in funding of £1.7million a year.

We set about building up our property portfolio sourcing privately rented properties across all of Cardiff for use as Temporary Accommodation.  Forward on 9 years and we now work with over 130 private landlords and 9 social landlords. We have become the biggest temporary accommodation provider in Wales with our portfolio of 287 properties and growing.  You would think that that would be plenty but in Cardiff alone we have housed 3184 homeless families and individuals in our 9 years.

That is 1 homeless family or individual housed by us for every day of the year.  That is a lot!

We have navigated our way through some turbulent times as Homeless Legislation has changed and welfare reform rolled out and we are still here to tell the tale.

It’s a lot of work and we could not do it without the efforts of a committed team, supportive partners and our compassionate landlords who choose to lease with us as they share our social ethos.

Our homeless families are with us on average for 8 months while going through the homelessness process and we still strive to make their time with us as comfortable as possible ensuring they have access to safe and secure homes. This year we are doubly proud as we were selected the winner at CIH Welsh Housing Awards 2018 in the Private Rented Sector category.

We are very proud to have supported so many homeless individuals and families while they await their permanent home at what is one of the most stressful experiences of their lives.  In an ideal world we would not be needed but while we are needed we will continue to make a difference in any way we can.
